Simple Tips to Overcome Winter Tiredness



Finding it difficult to roll out of your bed in the mornings in this cold weather? If yes, you are not alone, there are many people who feel tired during autumn or cold weather. Winter tiredness is common when the temperature drops. Probably, you need to blame the sunlight.

Your sleeping and waking pattern is disrupted as the days get shorter, causing fatigue. The scientific reason behind this is excessive production of a hormone known as melatonin that makes you feel tired. And this is caused by less sunlight. The secretion of sleep hormone is connected to light and dark. Your body tends to go to bed early when the sun sets early; hence, you may feel more sleepy and tired in the early evening.

Excessive lethargy during cold weather can be a sign of winter depression, also called seasonal affective disorder. If your winter tiredness is severe, you could suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome.

Here are a few simple tips to overcome winter fatigue:


1) Get early morning sunlight
Rise and open your curtains or blinds to get the early morning sunrays. And go outdoors in natural daylights; a morning walk can be beneficial. Make sure you get enough light and air at your work place and home.

2) Get quality sleep
A good night’s sleep during winter is essential. However, feeling more sleepy doesn’t mean you should sleep for longer. Excessive sleepiness during winter can make you feel more sluggish and tired during the day. Aim to sleep for eight hours daily and stick to your daily sleep schedule.

3) Exercise regularly
Exercise is important and it will never make you feel tired, irrespective of cold or hot weather. In fact, you will feel more energetic and revitalised. Aim to perform at least 150 minutes of exercise per week. Winter is a great time to start with physical activities.

4) Eat right
Include plenty of fruits and vegetables in order to improve your immune system. Winter vegetables like parsnips, turnips, carrots and swede are quite beneficial. Try to limit the foods rich in sugar, as you may have sweet tooth in the winter months.

5) Manage stress
Do you feel the time needed to get everything is less during shorter days? If so, stress can show up, which can make you feel more tired and sluggish. Find effective ways to manage stress by meditating, practicing yoga and deep breathing exercises.

In addition, you can rely on dietary supplements that can improve your immunity, preventing tiredness or fatigue.
