Toddler Safety: Baby Care & Tips

Many parents become nervous and cautious when it comes to taking care of their baby. Babies or toddlers are vulnerable to a few accidents that are preventable. Each year around 40,000 babies under five years are hospitalised due to accidents. Here are a few commonest accidents that can affect your little one:

1) Choking
Choking is an emergency condition that needs immediate medical attention. Food is one of the common things that can make your child choke. Also, they tend to put small objects in their mouths, causing choking. Do not give your baby hard foods and stay while feeding. Bottle feeding should be done carefully and you should hold the bottle while you feed your baby. Do not keep objects nearby your child.

2) Suffocation
Your baby may suffocate if you keep a pillow under the head of your baby. Keep nappy bags and plastic bags away from the reach and sight of toddlers. Special care should be taken when you carry your little one in a sling. To prevent suffocation, keep your child tight and their chin off their chest.

3) Strangulation
Never tie a dummy to the clothes, as the ribbon or tie could strangle them. Do not keep any type of blind cords or rope lying around. More importantly, do not use cot bumpers in a baby’s bed, they can make them choke or suffocate.

4) Falls & Injuries
Infants shortly learn how to kick, wriggle and roll over. They can roll over changing tables, sofas and beds. To prevent falls and injuries, make sure you change your baby’s nappy on a mat floor and do not leave your child unattended on sofa, bed or changing table. Try to use safety gates, teach your baby how to climb stairs and do not let your little one to sleep in the bunk bed. Keep sharp pointed objects away from your baby, such as knives, scissors and razors.

5) Burns & Scalds
A baby’s skin is very sensitive and is vulnerable to burns and scalds than adults. Extreme care should be taken during bath-time. Check the water before bathing your child, use lukewarm water. Avoid heating up bottles in a microwave.

Other issues include drowsing and house fires. There are few more baby care and tips, which can help prevent accidents in babies. Check with your GP for more information on toddler safety.
