Uses and Benefits of Neck Collar

A neck collar, or cervical collar, is an orthopaedic device used to support the neck. It is used in an emergency situation when a person suffers from traumatic head or neck injuries. However, it can be used to treat other orthopaedic conditions such as cervical spondylosis, post-surgical rehabilitation of the spine, and cervical neck pain.

A cervical collar is used therapeutically to relieve pain and re-align spinal cord. A patient may need a neck collar to support the neck while recovering from a surgical intervention of neck or spine. Find out the uses and benefits of neck collar:

Head or Neck Injury

A cervical collar is of great help in case of serious head or neck injury. It helps stabilise the injured person’s neck area that comprises the spinal cord and the brain, thereby preventing further injury. Also, it helps reduce the risk of spinal damage, paralysis and even death.

Rehabilitation

A neck collar is often advised during recovery from head injuries, or traumatic neck, or spinal surgery. It helps immobilise the injured area and release stress from that particular area. Usually, doctors advise people to use a cervical collar until the healing process ends.

Therapeutic Use

Cervical collars are used to manage neck and spinal cord conditions that may include whiplash, sprains and strains, and spinal cord alignment. In these conditions, the spinal tissues are severely injured. Other conditions in which a neck collar is useful are hyperextension, traumatic injuries, hyperflexion, rotation injury, whiplash, dislocations and intervertebral disc herniation.

Neck Pain & Stiffness

Neck pain with stiffness is one of the most prevalent health issues in the UK. Certain musculoskeletal issues can lead to neck pain and stiffness. Almost 90% of neck pain results from acute or frequent neck injuries or common strains or sprains.

Cervical Radiculopathy

Cervical disc herniation, tumours, traumas and rheumatic conditions can lead to nerve damage, causing cervical radiculopathy. Along with exercise and proper rest, you need a cervical collar to manage cervical radiculopathy. This condition is characterised by a pathological process that involves nerve root, trauma and disc herniation.

A neck brace is one of the most important orthopaedic aids that help relieve neck pain. Ask your GP to know more about proper use of neck collar.
