Myths and Facts about Back Pain


Back pain is the most common ailment experienced by millions of people. There are various causes associated with back pain, such as trauma, fall, intervertebral disc herniation and underlying rheumatic diseases. The pain might be dull aching or sharp with or without radiation to the legs. Experts believe that eight out of 10 people will suffer from back pain. Find out a few common myths and facts about back pain:

Myth – Always sit in an erect or straight position
Slumping is bad, but sitting upright and still for longer duration can lead to strain on your back. Hence, it is important that you take a few breaks if you are supposed to sit for longer period. Try standing for some time or lean back in your chair and let your back curve slightly.

Myth – Avoid lifting heavy objects
What matters is how you lift a heavy object. Inappropriate lifting of heavy objects can put great strain on your back. If you want to lift heavy object, squat close to it with the head up and back straight. Do not bend or twist your body; this may hurt your back badly. Make sure you avoid lifting objects that are too heavy for you.

Myth – Plenty of rest cures backache
Bed rest can help reduce back pain to a great extent. However, complete rest for a day or two can aggravate backache.

Myth – Injury is the only cause of back pain
Although injury is the common cause of pain in back, disc degeneration, certain infectious diseases and inherited conditions can also give rise to chronic back pain.

Myth – Exercise is not good for your back
This is really a big myth. Regular and proper exercise prevents back problems. Physiotherapy exercises are of great help, which include gentle movements of joints. However, avoid exercise if the pain persists. Once the pain subsides, an exercise can help reduce stiffness and improve flexibility.            
Fact – More fat, more pain
Yes, if your body is accumulated with too much of fat, you are prone to back problems. Extra weight puts stress on your back. Hence, it is important that you stay fit to prevent lumbar issues.

Fact – Alternative therapies help ease pain
Alternative modes of treatment such as acupuncture, Yoga, massage therapy, spinal manipulation, and progressive relaxation may help provide great relief from back pain.

Back pain medicines are effective, but you need to take them under the supervision of a medical professional.
